The SV started gushing oil as i was going down the freeway....pulled off and got to the nearest parking lot.

Kinja'd!!!

*sigh* i hope I shut it down quick enough to save the engine. If not....

Quick look-see revealed that the oil level was still 1/2 way between the low.and full mark, so I might have saved the engine. Looks like the culprit might be the sprocket shaft seal.

It looks dark in the picture so no ideas yet? Best case an oil filter or oil line maybe, good luck with it man.

Not good man...hopefully it’s OK! How long was it running after you noticed the oil?

Did you check the level later to see how low it was after the leak?

Not long. Still has oil 1/2 between the low and full mark. I think it might be the sprokect shaft seal. *sigh* ill take a closer look tmw

It creaks, it groans, it’s sloppy, but there’s a reason why I love my 85 nighthawk - pretty sure that thing can be drained of all fluids and still work. I was amazed that when I went to flush the lines for the clutch and brake.....neither really had fluid. Still worked okay. Same with oil that hadn’t been changed for an untold number of miles.... #TankBike just soldiers on.

Actually once I bled the brakes and put on brand new front brakes she stops like a dream. Dual front discs FTW. No oil leaks yet either. But the speedo cable lunched itself when I replaced the brakes and now that;s next on my list -_-

If you still had that much oil then the engine will be fine. Good job noticing quickly before it got out of hand.

I caught it before any major damage was done (i think) so im hopeful. Picking it up tmw and seeing what the issue is

Fortunate ‘break’ - when i had a similar experience several years back it was a thrown rod... Best of luck getting back on the road.

An oil dump at speed is one of my biggest fears. That’s why I ride something so “slow”. Beat you to it.

Glad you saved it. I just saw what dropped oil pressure will do to an engine. Ick.
